Good morning from GRL 2016 in Kansas City, Missouri!
Dragons
Dragon Thursday
Last week I decided to have some fun with my logo, Albert Phineas Drache. The awesome Catherine Dair created him and I decided it was time to get a little creative myself. I love the saying “I’m a Book Dragon! Not a worm”. I have seen this all over the internet and thought to search it’s origin. What I found was a lovely book titled A Book Dragon by Donn Kushner. This most likely has absolutely nothing to do with the saying other than it is a book loving dragon. I found the book used on Amazon and bought the hardback edition with dust jacket. It is in great condition. I received the book yesterday and have not had time to read it. I am very excited. The illustrations are beautiful.
Title: A Book Dragon
Author: Donn Kushner
Publisher: Henry Holt and Company
Publication date: April 1988
Length: 197 pages
Genre: Literature, Fiction, Teens
Design & Cover Illustrations by : Nancy Ruth Jackson
Summary: Nonesuch, the last in a line of dragons, uses his unique ability to change in size to survive for six centuries, during which time he observes such different humans as a medieval monk, an eighteenth-century London chemist, and a modern American bookseller.

Color Illustration from back dust jacket. This illustration appears throughout the book in black and white.
I will post a couple of the designs I came up with soon. Off to read about dragons. 😉

Dragon Thursday
This week in my search for all things dragon. I ran across an Etsy shop that makes and sells dragon wings for bearded dragons. I am not familiar with the care and keeping of reptiles, but this bearded dragon looks very majestic with its dragon wings. (Pretty adorable, really)

This week I discovered more beautiful and whimsical dragons on Etsy. Stained glass dragons.
This majestic dragon is called Sintara, Blue dragon and can be found at Firehorseglass. (Fire Horse Stained Glass Studio)
This gorgeous dragon can be found at OstisInpirations on Etsy.
From the description: Handcrafted using Tiffany stained glass methods. Each piece of stained glass is hand-cut and wrapped in fine copper foil. The Tiffany method involves hand cutting, breaking, grinding, copper foiling & soldering each glass piece.
Measures about 21″ x 28″ .
Maybe you are looking for something smaller and desk sized.
This piece is called Horned Dragon on Citron Quartz Base and can be found at
From the description: I love this 3 dimensional dragon! The wings are made from 3 types of stained glass, and it sits on a large cluster of golden colored citron quartz crystals. The back side has been decorated with 6 golden streaked clear glass nuggets. I used copper sheeting on the bottom to securely attach all the components . The solder has been patinated with black and I have added decorative soldering to all the solder seams.
There are pages and pages of stained glass dragons. Something for everyone. Have fun.

Dragon Thursday – Happy Autumnal Equinox
Happy Autumnal Equinox to those of us in the Northern hemisphere. It is the time of all things pumpkin spice. So , in the spirit of things, I Googled pumpkin spice dragons. Wow. It’s a thing. I found the most wonderful site with some whimsical dragons and yes, a pumpkin spice dragon. 🙂
I found this adorable dragon on Deviantart. The artist is PixieEmz and she has an Etsy shop, Myriad Art Studios, with more of these whimsical creatures. To see more of this artists work visit her shop here:

Dragon Thursday
I was sitting at the computer yesterday thinking about dragons and our perception of them which led to thoughts of dragons in popular culture.

One of the first dragons I remember is Puff the Magic Dragon from the Peter, Paul and Mary song from my childhood. I have a dragon music box that I bought almost forty years ago that plays that song. The music is a little slower after forty years of playing Puff the Magic Dragon, and that is ok. ❤
Of course there is Smaug from The Hobbit and Falkor from The Neverending Story. Toothless from The How to Train Your Dragon movies and Haku from Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away,
Plus who wouldn’t love a dragon with Sean Connery’s voice – Draco from Dragonheart.
There are many, many more, and we haven’t even scratched the surface on all of the book dragons out there. I am leaving links to three sites that explore Dragons in Pop Culture for you to enjoy.

Dragon Thursday
Last night I went in search of dragon coffee mugs. There are many styles , sayings and types of dragons to choose from. I happened across this one (I really like the glasses):

It is called Ravenclaw Dragon and the artist is Shaneisadragon. They have a large selection of dragon themed art, plus a section titled Autistic Pride/Neurodiveristy
and an extensive LGBTQIAP+ pride collection.
About Shaneisadragon from their Redbubble profile:
“Hi, I’m Shane 🙂 I’m a young queer autist trying to figure out life. Sometimes I create things. If one of them happens to be a digital art/design thing, you may find it here.
There are now several LGBTQIAP+ pride collections. I want to be fully inclusive, so if you don’t see your identity represented, please feel free to bring it to my attention!
Also: the paw print, butterfly, owl, cat, bat, wolf, unicorn, and dragon pairs are now available in many identity combinations, but if yours isn’t one of them, you can request it by messaging me here or at shaneisadragon.tumblr.com/ask. I will also make combinations of 3-4 upon request!”

I decided to search for dragons on Etsy this week. I saw several fun stores with interesting and unique dragon products. With summer ending and the baking season approaching, this one caught my eye.
I always loved the rolling pins that my grandmother used. They were utilitarian and well worn from many years of baking. I now have her rolling pins as well as my great grandmothers and my moms. When I found these whimsical rolling pins on Etsy, I was delighted. I could just imagine all of the fun cookies and pastries that could be created with these.
The store is called Dough Roller. It is a small family owned business near Vilnius, Lithuania.
This wonderful dragon design is just one of many they have in their store. I also love the Coffee Style themed roller. Plus there are some Folk and Flower themes, Holidays, Movies, Cats, Dog themes… Okay. I found many that I would love to have. Be sure to click on the logo above and find your favorite rolling pin.
Enjoy,

Dragon Thursday
Recently, I received an unexpected package in the mail. I recognized the name on the return address , but could not imagine what they would be sending me. It turned out to be a beautiful framed cross-stitched dragon. I did not know why I was sent this amazing gift and contacted the friend that sent it.
It was made by Jennifer Hesse for an auction held by The Knightly Order of the Fiat Lux (KOFL) ,a fraternal non-profit organization dedicated to serving the community, ( http://www.kofl-games.org/about.php )
The auction supported The Autism Society of North Carolina.( http://www.autismsociety-nc.org/ ) Jennifer put a lot of time into this beautiful piece and I am honored that someone wanted me to have this gorgeous dragon. There was no note, and Jennifer couldn’t say who had won the auction or who had sent it to me, other than they are a mutual friend.
